STS Aviation Services Creates 60 Jobs in Birmingham to Support Aircraft Conversion Work

Boeing Names STS Aviation Services in Birmingham as Key Wedgetail Supplier

BIRMINGHAM, September 30, 2020 — STS Aviation Services, a division of STS Aviation Group and a leading aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider to the global aviation industry, has hired 60 aircraft maintenance professionals in Birmingham to support conversion work on the United Kingdom’s fleet of Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) MK1 aircraft.

“We are committed to hiring locally for this project, and so far the response has been incredible,” said Imogen Day, Director of Human Resources for STS Aviation Services in the United Kingdom. “Over the next few months we will hire approximately 50 more people to support the required conversion work, and we are also in the early stages of creating internship opportunities and apprenticeship programmes as our team looks to partner with educational institutions in and around the West Midlands.”

More than half of the 30 Boeing employees who will be based in Birmingham are already on site alongside their STS colleagues as preparation work ramps up this year. These Birmingham-based employees will join the 50 Boeing employees already working on the Wedgetail programme throughout the UK.

The Wedgetail conversion programme was recently awarded to STS Aviation Services by Boeing and it will call upon both STS and Boeing teams to transform multiple 737 Next Generation aircraft into a modern airborne battle management fleet. The new Wedgetails will protect the UK through tracking airborne and maritime threats and directing fighter jets and warships. Work for this project will be carried out at STS Aviation Services’ expanding, state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance facility located at Birmingham Airport (BHX).

“Our team’s commitment to source local candidates, particularly during a pandemic and at such a difficult time, gives me a great sense of pride” said Mick Adams, Senior Vice President and CEO of STS Aviation Services. “Not only does this conversion programme balance our company’s portfolio perfectly, it will soon give many people in the West Midlands expanded opportunities for apprenticeships, internships and full-time jobs at our Birmingham Airport facility.”

STS Aviation Services is promoting careers associated with the Wedgetail conversion programme on its online jobs board. Those interested in being considered for a position are encouraged to learn more and apply online directly. Candidates are also welcome to send CVs to recruitment@stsaviationservices.com.

STS Aviation Services Grows C Check Services Team; Expands Airbus Tooling

C Check Services in Melbourne, Florida (1)

MELBOURNE, August 24, 2020 — STS Aviation Services, a division of STS Aviation Group and a leading aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider to the global aviation industry, grows its C check services team and expands its Airbus tooling as work ramps up inside of its base maintenance facility in Melbourne, Florida.

“We are beginning to see more and more commercial aircraft come out of storage,” said Mark Smith, President of STS Aviation Group. “When that happens, a C Check is often required before an aircraft can return to service. Right now, our team in Melbourne is turning C Checks over very quickly, and that spells immediate revenue for our commercial clients who are all eager to get their aircraft back in the sky as soon as possible.”

According to domestic air travel data points provided by the TSA and recently published by Forbes, a typical day in August of 2019 saw 2.5 million passengers take to the skies. On August 23, 2020, however, that number rested at 841,806. And while a 66% reduction in year-over-year traffic is nowhere near a return to normal, that percentage is far better now than it was in April of 2020 when domestic air travel was experiencing, on average, a 95% reduction in passenger traffic.

“I am so proud of the work our Melbourne team is doing right now,” said Shane King, Vice President of STS Aviation Group. “Over the past few months this crew has exhibited a level of resilience worthy of praise. Their collective ability to rise above the looming uncertainty caused by COVID-19 to become a crucial cog in the wings of recovery for the commercial aviation industry has been remarkable to witness.”

Over the past four weeks, STS Aviation Services has added 15 new members to its aircraft maintenance team in Melbourne, and that team just accepted a C check A319, a project that is already putting its newly expanded Airbus tooling to good use.

Boeing Names STS Aviation Services as Key Wedgetail Supplier

Boeing Names STS Aviation Services in Birmingham as Key Wedgetail Supplier

LONDON, May 20, 2020 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] has selected STS Aviation Services and its Birmingham site for the conversion work on the United Kingdom’s fleet of five Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning (AEW) Mk1 aircraft.

The conversion work – turning commercial 737 Next Generation airliners into a modern airborne battle management fleet – will create more than 100 highly skilled jobs: 90 with STS Aviation Services and 30 more with Boeing. The Birmingham-based employees will join the 50 Boeing employees already working on the Wedgetail programme throughout the UK, including at Bristol, Yeovil and RAF Waddington. The new work will be done at the hangar formerly operated by Monarch Aircraft Engineering at Birmingham Airport.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) announced in March 2019 a contract for five Wedgetail aircraft, guaranteeing the UK the world’s most effective AEW&C aircraft at a fixed price. The Wedgetail’s advanced radar and 10 state-of-the-art mission crew consoles can track airborne and maritime targets simultaneously, allowing crews to direct offensive and defensive forces while maintaining continuous surveillance of an operational area.

The Wedgetail is a proven aircraft that is currently in service around the world, including by Royal Australian Air Force, which used the aircraft on operations in the battle against Daesh in Iraq and Syria. It has been continuously improved since its inception, and it is the most capable aircraft of its type.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with STS Aviation Services in Birmingham on the Wedgetail,” said Anna Keeling, managing director of Boeing Defence UK. “Wedgetail will provide the UK with the most advanced and reliable aircraft of its type in the world at a fixed price, and this work will provide good jobs for the many skilled aerospace engineers and mechanics in and around Birmingham.”

Boeing and STS Aviation Services, which also operates a facility in Newquay in Cornwall, have already started recruiting in key areas for the new work in Birmingham.

“Being awarded this contract is not only great news for STS Aviation Services and Boeing, it’s also great news for the Birmingham region, and a much-needed jolt for UK aviation,” said Mick Adams, senior vice president and CEO of STS Aviation Services. “We have a long and favourable history working with Boeing, and we’re excited that this work will be completed at our new state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance facility in Birmingham.”

The first two US-based aircraft have been stripped to their frames and will arrive in the UK later this year. The first Wedgetail will be delivered to the RAF in 2023 and will based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. STS Aviation Services joins other UK suppliers on the programme: Leonardo, which will deliver an integrated Defensive Aids System from its operation in Luton, and Ridge architects, which is working with Boeing to design the facility that will house the Wedgetail fleet there.

The work was previously announced for Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. Marshall remains a valued supplier to Boeing and the two companies will continue their partnership on other programmes like the P-8.

Boeing’s command-and-control aircraft expertise began in 1977, when it first modified a 707 aircraft for the United States. With the Wedgetail, the RAF will join an AEW&C fleet of 14 aircraft in operation around the world with the Republic of Korea Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and Turkish Air Force.

STS Aviation Services Revamps Canadian MRO Facilities to Manufacture Critical Supplies for COVID-19

Copy of Working together to (1)

MONTREAL, April 23, 2020 — STS Aviation Services (STS), a division of STS Aviation Group and a leading MRO provider to the global aviation industry, has started manufacturing critical supplies at its Canadian AMO repair stations in support of the global COVID-19 pandemic relief effort.

Non-medical face masks and face shields, medical gowns, scrubs, patient curtains, aircraft seat blockers, aircraft seat cover headrests and office cubicle dividers are now on the production line. The company is also prototyping designs on Hazmat suits, hospital sheets, pillowcases and aircraft in-flight entertainment screen guards.

Lena Watters, Sr. Vice President & General Manager of STS Aviation Services, said “Now is not the time for our company, or any other company with the means, for that matter, to sit idly on the sidelines in anticipation of a positive outcome. Knowing that we had the capability to produce supplies that are in critical need to the public, we decided to act fast to get prototypes made, tested and re-tested all before flipping our production lines.”

In early March of 2020, STS Aviation Group issued a “work from home” order for all non-essential personnel across its global workforce. In addition, the team executed a meticulous work-safety plan for all essential employees that remained on the job site.

This work-safety plan, as noted by STS Aviation Group’s President, Mark Smith, was a critical component in ensuring the success of this relief effort. Smith said “The safety of our essential employees has always been our primary concern. If they were not healthy and given a sterile and pristine environment to operate in, we would not have been able to lend our support to this global relief effort. In saying that, I am immensely proud of our team’s time, dedication and hard work. They made this possible. Now let us continue that work and get these supplies to those who need it most.”

STS Aviation Services Completes FOMAX Modification Program For easyJet

STS Aviation Services Completes FOMAX Modification Program For easyJet

NEWQUAY, April 22, 2020 — STS Aviation Services (STS), a division of STS Aviation Group and a leading MRO provider to the global aviation industry, announces the completion of its long-running program to implement FOMAX modifications to easyJet’s fleet of aircraft.

Malcolm Welsby, Chief Technical Officer for STS Aviation Services, said “Customer success lies at the core of everything we do here at STS Aviation Services. And when you bring together a leading MRO and an airline focused on efficiency, safety and customer satisfaction, the possibilities to create increased value are endless.”

STS Aviation Services’ deep partnership with easyJet is a great example of what synergy and innovation can yield. Since this partnership began, the company has delivered 39 aircraft with a TDR of 96% based on planned hours. And while aircraft came in for specific tasks, STS Aviation Services was able to ensure that 75% of all easyJet aircraft left its facility with no carry-forward items.

Kevin Dudley, Chief Commercial Officer for STS Aviation Services, said “We’re delighted to have been selected by easyJet to embody this key modification program at our Newquay, Cornwall MRO facility. We have been privileged to work with easyJet in the past on several key projects, but this was by far the most comprehensive given all the nose-to-tail inputs required throughout the 2019/2020 winter season. To have successfully delivered this program on time and on budget demonstrates exactly what STS Aviation Services stands for.”

STS Aviation Services has limited capacity remaining for its winter 2020/2021 program, and global operators looking for comprehensive MRO support are being asked to email sales@stsaviationservices.com.
